Youth Centre

Programs and activities

The focus of the Marttinen youth centre program services is in environmental, adventure and cultural heritage education. Thus we aim to promote the appreciation of traditions, reinforce people’s connection with nature and support the development of young people’s identity.

The instructors are Marttinen’s own youth work professionals or our highly skilled cooperation partners. In addition we offer students in the field the chance to participate in an apprenticeship in our safe and varied operating environment. Marttinen’s program services are developed further through interaction with children, young people and instructors.

Adventure

The magnificent surrounding of Marttinen youth centre offers many possibilities to experience the different kinds of adventures. Marttinen is located in the middle of the Finnish nature with lakes and the forest and it's possible to enjoy of multitude of activities regardless of the season both in winter and in the summertime. Thanks to the Herraskoski canal built in 1907 between Lake Toisvesi and Lake Marttisenalainen and leading to Näsijärvi, it is possible to paddle around Marttinen.

In the wintertime you can try for example kick sledding in the area. You can also experience the element of ice by climbing up the ice wall or by walking on thin and breakable ice courageously and safely dressed in a rescue suit. In the summertime it's possible to descend by rope from the bluff of Toriseva and experience the charm of the natural rock faces. You can also canoe in the beautiful waters and learn for example the stand-up paddling.

Youth Centre Marttinen has constructed special environments for adventures. Marttinen’s multi-functional climbing tower and the indoor climbing wall offer safe climbing programs all year-round. All forms of climbing are exercise that develops a range of skills. Above all else, climbing builds up muscle strength, stamina and motor skills. It also trains problem-solving and concentration skills effectively.

Our environment

The nature of the island of Marttinen, and its forests, water and paths, offers all you need for both independent and guided environmental education activities. The Marttinen youth centre wants to strengthen everyone’s relationship with nature and an environmentally friendly way of thinking. We provide environmental education from a youth-work perspective.

We find experiences and learning in nature in all seasons by going on hikes. We go on hikes on foot or with snowshoes. A night in the middle of the forest is an unforgettable experience! We get to know the wonders of nature by studying nature, birdwatching and forest-skill competitions.

Creativity

Young people are beginning to appreciate manual skills more and more. The programmes teach useful skills, present new materials, refresh what participants already know and bring their visions to life. The manual skills programme is also a nice memory from the camp!

Traditions

The aim of cultural heritage programs is to help understand cultural heritage and increase knowledge of the past and past life. The programs explore history through making and experiencing.

Team work

Working together is fun, working together we do more and working together we learn more. By co-operating the group develops their communication skills, social skills, learns new things from their friends or colleagues and much more.

Instruction and teaching services

We want to be your partner in education.

The trainers are Marttinen’s own youth work professionals or our highly skilled cooperation partners, who are experienced in youth work. In addition, we offer students in the field the chance to participate in an apprenticeship in our safe and varied operating environment.

Youth work skills

When booking, it is worth telling us about any aims the group has during the camp, such as developing a common spirit, getting the quieter ones involved or preventing bullying. Our professional instructors use these aims to help plan a camp programme that will support learning and education.

When the camp starts, there will be an initial information session for the group to explain practical matters and establish the participants’ expectations of the camp. We aim for every group to have its own buddy instructor who will chat with the young people, get to know the group better and see how progress is being made towards aims.
